Eons ago, as if by some ancient alchemy, the Canadian Shield was forged in a cauldron of molten stone; and today the pre-cambrian bedrock of this beautiful northern land informs and shapes that most iconic of Canadian ‘landscapes’: Algonquin.

Over countless seasons, ice, deluge, wind and wave, all have left their signature marks, but the ancient crystalline stone seems almost impervious to the passage of time; the bones of Algonquin determine how and where – and to what extent – they will yield to the elements, and the biosphere, above. Fire continues to shape this place, through another kind of alchemy, as the sun pours heat and light down on the life that now inhabits this land.

Rocky shorelines determine where water can flow and collect; forming that familiar mosaic – that most recognizable of shapes – the map of Algonquin. We paddle and portage accordingly, amidst the flora and fauna this ancient land supports and nurtures; and we return, time and time again, because this place nurtures us as well – shapes us even – as it nourishes and inspires.
