This sculpture, crafted meticulously from wood and brass, captures the tender yet urgent moment
of two fledgling barn swallows perched on a reed, their beaks wide open, waiting for the
nourishment only their parents can provide. The delicate balance between the fragility of life and
the relentless need for survival is embodied in the fine details of their feathered forms, the
tension in their outstretched necks, and the hopeful, yet anxious expression in their eyes.
This scene of the swallows waiting for their parents serves as a powerful metaphor for children
around the world who go to bed hungry, their cries unheard or unanswered due to circumstances
beyond their control. Just as the swallows are dependent on their parents for sustenance, these
children rely on their caregivers, who may be struggling to provide for them due to wars,
economic hardships, or systemic inequalities. The sculpture is a reminder of the precariousness
of life and the innocence of those who suffer the consequences of larger forces at play.
In creating this piece, I aim to evoke empathy and awareness, inviting viewers to consider the
shared vulnerability of all young beings—whether in the natural world or human society—and
the profound responsibility we all bear to nurture and protect them. The work stands as a silent
plea for compassion, a call to action, and a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.
