This painting explores the quiet vitality of Algonquin’s wetlands — the still water corridors threading through birch and pine that form the park’s ecological core.
Wetlands function as the kidneys of the landscape: filtering sediment and nutrients, regulating water flow, and slowly recharging the groundwater that sustains the broader ecosystem.
The scene captures a moment of surface stillness that belies constant biological activity below — decomposing organic matter enriching the substrate, riparian vegetation stabilizing the banks, and the water column itself cycling nutrients through the food web.
To paint this place was to pay attention to processes mostly invisible to us. The wetland does not announce itself. It simply endures, and in enduring, makes everything else possible.
