Themed piece for “Shaped by the Land”
In Algonquin we experience over 7600 square kilometers of mostly wilderness, and in leaving behind the routines and constructs that normally guide us through our urban lifestyles, we have the chance to experience time in a different way. Time shapes the land, but slow gradual changes are not always apparent. Little seems to have changed from visit to visit, but in paying attention to small details, those changes would become more visible. The land can shape our perception of time if we allow ourselves to experience the flow of the day through nature’s eyes, creating a slow down where we are able to be more fully aware of what is going on around us. These moments of being more fully aware, without distractions, lead to lasting and meaningful memories that are enduring and detailed. It is what makes the land and park experience unique, and sometimes life changing. This painting recalls evening canoe experiences. It is a silent observation of what is essentially a daily occurrence, but in Algonquin, on a lake in a canoe, with a full sky view, there is full advantage to see dramatically changing colour. The space and stillness magnify the event creating that fully aware experience that becomes personal and memorable.
