Not only did the retreating glaciers form the existing  lakes and wetlands but the environment is constantly being influenced by the current  weather and wildlife. The frequent precipitation replenishes the marshes and its depth is often controlled by beavers. In this case the beavers and black spruce coexist and  benefit from the environment created by all those forces.
