Paddling Philip Edward Island
* this piece was painted for our 2020 exhibit, “The Spirit of the Group of Seven”.
Artist comments: The Group of Seven were an inspirational group of artists who drew their own inspiration from many of the same areas I base my work on. A painting by A.Y.Jackson titled “March Storm – Georgian Bay” portrays vertical bands of cold rain sweeping over the rain-drenched islands and headlands of Georgian Bay while the last of the winter snows cling to rock. Sweeping bands of falling rain are familiar to me, as a paddler on Georgian Bay. They can carry the chill of winter or bring a delightful cooling on a hot day’s paddle. This painting portrays one band I encountered while paddling from Killarney Park to the French River delta. A warm summer’s day was broken by streamers of rain that left quickly, returning us to warm calm waters.
